Alice R. Faulkner

July 16, 1923 — October 19, 2012

Alice Road Faulkner MT. PLEASANT - Alice Road Faulkner, 89, died Friday morning, October 19, 2012. Born in Durham, North Carolina, on July 16, 1923, to Alma Tilly Road and Lucious Chastaine Roach, Alice graduated from Durham High School and The University of Tennessee at Knoxville. She was predeceased by her second husband, Harry L. Faulkner, of New Bern, North Carolina, and brothers: Clinton Roach, Douglas Roach, and Charles Roach. She is survived by her sister, Anne Roach Browning, as well as her three daughters: Nancy Norcott Cheek, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Leigh Cheek Raynor (husband Reed), of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; and Betsy Cheek Howland (husband Michael) of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. Her grandchildren include: Elizabeth Raynor Singleton (husband Lee); William Reed Raynor Jr. (wife Millie); and Alice Bernard Howland. Great-grandchildren include: Raynor Leigh Singleton; Reed Raynor and Watsie Raynor. Alice was bright, elegant, funny, loyal, warm and comforting-a Southern lady who served her country during The War as a USO volunteer and nurtured a keen interest in national politics and humanitarian issues throughout her life. She was a founding member of the Chapel Hill PTA Thrift Shop and Country Store; a founding member of the Chapel Hill Public Library; and was instrumental in the formation of St. Thomas Moore School as well. She called herself a Yellow-Dog Democrat but had scores of friends on both sides of the aisle and treated all with respect. But she was loyal to one team and one team only on the basketball court: her UNC Tarheels. A service in Alice's honor was held at The Franke Home on Saturday, October 20, 2012. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Ashley Hall, 172 Rutledge Avenue, Charleston, S.C. 29403, or Crises Ministries, 573 Meeting Street, Charleston, S.C. 29403.
