Fenton Crockett Miller Jr.

Fenton Crocket Miller, Jr., LCDR (MSC), US Navy retired of James Island died July 23, 2013 at the Hospice of Charleston Center after a long illness. Fenton was born July 18, 1937 in Radford, Virginia to Fenton Crocket Miller and Annie Yates Miller. He served his country for 27 years achieving the rank of Lt. Commander retiring in March 1981. He served aboard the USS Newport News, USS Providence, USS Fulton, USS Gilmore, USS Beach Long and the USS Hancock. On the Long Beach, he participated in Task Force One, an Operation Sea Orbit-Around the World on Nuclear Power. On the USS Hancock he served two years on-duty in the Gulf of Tonkin and is a Vietnam Veteran. As a Medical Service Officer he also served at Naval Hospitals at Portsmouth, NH, Charleston SC and Jacksonville Fl. He received the Good Conduct fourth award, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four stars, Vietnam campaign medal with device, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea), Navy achievement medal, Navy Commendation Medal, and Meritorious Unit Commendation. After retirement from the US Navy, Fenton worked as a building inspector for the City of Folly, Building Official for the City Hanahan and the Town of James Island #1. As Recycling Coordinator, he established the recycling program for Berkeley /County and served as City Administrator of the City of Hanahan. In his retirement, he returned to his home on Folly Beach and enjoyed fishing, woodworking and being a beach bum. He was a member of the Folly Beach Exchange Club and served as South Carolina District Exchange President, District Treasurer and National Exchange First Gentlemen. He was a long time member of the Folly Beach United Methodist Church, and a member of the Fleet Reserve Assoc. #269 and American Legion Post #147. He is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years Margaret (Margie) Miller , one son, Fenton Courtney Miller(Marcia) of Hanahan, three daughters, Elizabeth Braungel (John) and Bonnie Jensen (Scott) of Mandan ND, and Kathy Nielsen (Jeff) of Hazen, ND, a step-daughter Evy MacNeill (Dominick) of Ladson, and nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Fenton Crocket Miller III, and three brothers, Ronald, Marvin and Roy Miller. A memorial Service will be held Saturday August 3, 2013 at Folly Beach Baptist Church. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10 to 11 with a memorial service at 11:30. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his name can be made to the Folly Beach Exchange Club, POB 14, Folly Beach 29439 or the Folly Beach United Methodist Church, Folly Beach 29439. The family wishes to thank the staff and volunteers of the Hospice Center of Charleston for their kind caring during his final days, and the doctors and nurses of the Medical University of South Carolina for their care in extending his life over the past several years.
