June Maughan Maclure

June 4, 1924 — July 26, 2014

With great respect and love we announce the passing of our dear mother June Maughan Maclure, who died at age 90 on July 26, 2014 in Mt. Pleasant, SC. June lived a full life of joy and vitality, centered around her adoring family who she cherished and inspired. She was born in Rexburg, Idaho to Olive Hansen Maughan and George Harrison Maughan, who raised her with deep love, a sense of the pioneering spirit, a respect for education, a strong connection to family, and of being of service to the greater community at large. June graduated from Cornell University with a BA degree in Human Ecology, and during World War II enjoyed her part-time job serving the young GI's in the college dining halls as they studied for their officer postings. June married her paratrooper sweetheart Richard Willey Maclure in 1946, and enjoyed 59 years of love and companionship until Richard's passing in 2005. Together they raised three children who completed the family and gave them an opportunity to instill in their children a love and excitement in the world. June and Richard encouraged their children to follow their passions, to live to their potential, and to give and be of service to their family and to the community. June herself was an active member of the community, and after college she worked for the University of California Extension Service, providing education and services to families and farmers. She supported her husband as he completed college after the war, and moved the family to Massachusetts as he pursued his career in youth services. In Massachusetts June continued her career in education and taught at Waltham High School for 16 years, teaching students the home economic skills of food and nutrition, child development, and sewing. She developed an innovative program of placing students in preschool settings to gain professional skills and training in providing high-quality and literacy-rich environments where young children could thrive and develop. June was respected and admired by all of her professional work colleagues, and left a lasting legacy of the importance of providing valuable skills and education to working families. After retirement June and Richard moved to Clearwater, FL and enjoyed the beauty and fun of that tropical environment. They later moved to Mt. Pleasant, SC to live near their oldest daughter and her family. June enjoyed travelling to many exciting and exotic places around the world with her husband, adored her many cats and dogs, could pluck out a tune on the ukulele while harmonizing with her daughters, raced her children down the hills on Flexible Flyer sleds, and could pack a mean picnic lunch. June's spirit is joining her beloved husband Richard Willey Maclure who passed away in 2005, and her cherished son Jeffrey Maughan Maclure, who passed away in 2012. She is remembered and honored by her daughter Susan Willey Fitts and her husband Casey Fitts of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and daughter Holly Hansen Maclure and her husband Paolo Ciccone of Santa Cruz, CA, and also by her granddaughter Jessica Ann Fiitts and her husband Mahmoud Arram and their soon-to-be-born daughter, grandson Tyler Maclure Fitts, and granddaughter Molly Lambert Fitts. June is also remembered with great love by her sister Ruth Russell and sister-in-law Helene Dawson, and all of her nephews, nieces, extended family and friends who are wonderfully numerous in number and who individually each gave June enormous happiness and cherished memories. We are also grateful for the love June received from friends and caregivers at Franke at Seaside. Her family will be holding a private memorial and celebration of her life. Funeral arrangments will be handled by Palmetto Cremation Society. In lieu of flowers we would suggest donations to the Charleston Animal Society or the worldwide charity organization Heifer International. Arrangements by PALMETTO CREMATION SOCIETY, 11 Cunnington Ave., Charleston, SC 29405, (843) 722-2555. Online condolences may be left at www.palmettocremationsociety.com
