Margaret Peak Cornelison

August 29, 1919 — January 18, 2014

Margaret H. Peak Cornelison, 94, beloved wife of Charles H. ‘Jack’ Cornelison, LCDR, US Navy (Ret), died peacefully on Saturday, January 18, 2014, to once again join her dear sisters, brothers, parents and many friends who had preceded her. She was born in Spirit River, Alberta, Canada, on August 29, 1919; although her actual birthdate was a source of some controversy. After several days journey to return to the county seat to record Margaret’s birth, her doctor apparently forgot the actual date. Neither her mother nor father could agree on the actual date of her birth either. It was recorded and thereafter celebrated on August 29th. Her family eventually moved from Canada finally settling in Santa Rosa, California. She met Jack just after WWII ended, while working in San Francisco for Pacific Bell. They were married in February of 1946 and together lived all over the world due to Jack’s long military career. Together they golfed and socialized with friends wherever they lived. Their final move was from Arizona to Charleston, SC, last February. Margaret was a wonderful wife, mother, and homemaker. She was an excellent golfer and was the ladies golfing champ at two golf courses in the same year! She was also a competitive bridge player, skilled knitter, and couture sewing enthusiast. She will be deeply missed by Jack, their children, their grandchildren, and great grandchildren and all who knew her. Survivors include her husband, Jack, sons Gary A. Cornelison (Pat), of Virginia Beach, VA, and Ronald F. Cornelison (Cindee Jackson), Alexandria, VA, and daughter Vickey L. Cornelison-Grant (Chris Grant) of Charleston, SC. Grandchildren include: Matt Cornelison (Colleen) of Virginia Beach, VA; Christine Bonnor (Ben) of Charlotte, NC; Elizabeth Cathcart (Chris) of Washington, DC; Jenny Bowne (Gabe) of Costa Mesa, CA; Laura Margaret Sacher (Paul) of Alexandria, VA; Margaux Cornelison (Sean Lynam) of Brooklyn, NY; William Cornelison of San Diego, CA; Mikell Dawson of Johns Island, SC; and Emily Dawson Meeks (Bill) of Yonges Island, SC; Skylar Jackson Moss (John) of Alpharetta, GA. In addition, Margaret and Jack have twelve great grandchildren (with two more expected within months!). The family would like to thank the wonderful caretakers that have been so devoted to ensuring Margaret’s comfort and well-being during this difficult time. We would like to especially thank Rhunetta, Rose, Nicole, and Andrea. Without this team, Margaret would not have been able to stay in the comfort of her own home. We owe you a debt of gratitude for your many kindnesses. The family also wishes to thank Lutheran Hospice for their care and especially recognize Margaret’s nurse, Moya, as well as Dr. Jerome E. Kurent, Amanda, Aileen, and the entire staff for their compassionate care and devoted service on Margaret’s behalf. Our family is touched and grateful to you all. A private memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Arrangements by Palmetto Cremation Society, Charleston, SC.
