Sue Garvin Howard

July 31, 1918 — January 13, 2015

Our beloved “Susie”, Sue Garvin Howard, died peacefully at her James Island home on January 13, 2015, surrounded by loving family and friends. She was 96. Born on July 31, 1918, Sue was the daughter of the late Annabell Courtney Garvin and Luther Ernest Garvin. She was born in New Holland Community, Aiken County, SC, and spent her childhood with her brothers and sisters at the family farm there. She graduated from Aiken High School and studied voice at Furman University. In 1938, Sue married her childhood friend, the late Edward Hartwell Howard, and had three daughters, Linda, Judy and Courtney. While a resident of Aiken, Sue enjoyed many years of community singing and theater with her husband. A dedicated gardener and volunteer, she was a member of the Country Garden Club of Aiken, for which she wrote a history in 1993. Sue became the social editor of the Aiken Standard and Review in 1950. During her employment there, she received three awards from the South Carolina Press Association for her daily column, “Town Topics”, and for her editing of the women’s page. From 1965 to 1975, Sue served as the assistant administrator at the Aiken Nursing Home, which was founded by her sister, Jimmie Harris. In 1999, Sue moved to Bishop Gadsden Retirement Community to be closer to family. A true Southern lady, Susie had a sweet graciousness of spirit that touched the lives of all those who knew her. She was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. She is survived by her daughters, Linda Sue Poston and Judy Whitworth (Larry) of Mt. Pleasant, and was preceded in death by her daughter Courtney Quattlebaum (Dr. Thomas) of Charleston; her grandchildren, Leslie Poston Rowell of Beaufort and Lance Poston of Florence; Heath and David Whitworth of Summerville; Anne Quattlebaum and Mary Quattlebaum de Haas of Charleston, Thomas Quattlebaum of Virginia Beach and Dr. Elizabeth Quattlebaum Cox of Chapel Hill; and great- grandchildren, Lauren Poston of N. Charleston; Daniel and Kristen Rowell of Beaufort; Lynsay Whitworth of Greenville and Madison Whitworth of Mt. Pleasant; Elliot de Haas of Charleston; and Annabelle and Juliet Quattlebaum of Virginia Beach. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 17 at 2 PM at the Chapel at Bishop Gadsden, 1 Bishop Gadsden Way, James Island. Interment will be held on Saturday, May 9 at 2 PM at Graniteville Cemetery, Aiken, SC.
