It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Christy Kay Carpenter (Palmateer), of Columbia, South Carolina, who left us on September 1, 2025, at the age of 64. Christy was born on April 18, 1961, in Gary, Indiana, to Barbara Webdell and Williard Palmateer.
Christy lived in Crown Point, Indiana, for 27 years before moving to Columbia, South Carolina, where she spent the last 8 years of her life.
Christy was a devoted daughter, loving sister, cherished wife, and a proud mother and grandmother. She is survived by her mother and stepmother, Barbara Webdell and Linda Palmateer; her sisters, Cindy, Cheryl, and Carrie; her loving husband of many years, Kevin Carpenter; her children, Andy (Rachiel) Carpenter, Allison (Matt) Conroy, and Lexie (Doug) Robinson; and four grandchildren, soon to be five.
Christy dedicated 38 years of her life to making a difference as a public school teacher, impacting the lives of countless children. Her passion for service extended beyond the classroom, as she volunteered for numerous organizations including Relay for Life, the Ronald McDonald House, cancer camps, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and her own church. Christy also shared her personal journey as a mother of a child with cancer through her book Fourtitude, offering hope and strength to others facing similar challenges.
Outside of her work, Christy was a passionate Chicago Cubs fan, never missing a moment of her team's remarkable journey to winning the World Series in 2016. She loved to spend time on the lake with her family, travel, swim, and play golf. Her zest for life and devotion to family will forever be remembered.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Sandhills Community Church, 3513 Hard Scrabble Rd, Columbia, SC 29223. A celebration of life will also be held in Indiana at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Ronald McDonald House in Christy's honor.
