Craig McCarthy, of Columbia, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2026, after a courageous battle with stage 4 esophageal cancer. He was surrounded by his dearest loved ones in his final moments.

Craig was born on February 18, 1969, in Connecticut to his mother, Pamela McCarthy Brown, and his father, Craig Dennis McCarthy. During his childhood, Craig traveled and lived for a time in the Caribbean before eventually settling in Puerto Rico. It was there that he met his first wife and welcomed his first child, Teresa McCarthy, whom he lovingly called by her middle name, Michelle, after his beloved little sister. Craig later moved with his wife and daughter to Florida, where they welcomed his second child, a son, Zachary Craig McCarthy.

Craig was the picture of kindness and perseverance. No matter what difficulties life placed in front of him, he never stopped sharing a kind smile, offering a helping hand, making someone laugh, or simply bringing joy and positivity to those around him.

Peace was truly his mission and his motto. He wore it on his shirts, expressed it through the peace sign in photographs, and, most importantly, carried it in his heart. Peace and joy were always at the center of the way Craig chose to live his life.

In addition to being a hardworking man and devoted father, Craig had many passions and hobbies. He was exceptionally bright, and one of his favorite pastimes was chess. He often played online against people from around the world, frequently winning matches and showing off his remarkable wit and strategic mind.

Craig also enjoyed golf and was quite talented at it. More than anything, though, he loved being outdoors and surrounded by nature. If you asked him about his favorite place, he would most certainly say Hollywood Beach, Florida, where he spent many wonderful weekends, especially with his children during their childhood.

In his later years, Craig loved cruising along the coast on his motorcycle. He also enjoyed hiking near a creek or any body of water, especially when accompanied by his beloved dog, Zeus.

But if you asked Craig what his greatest adventure had been, his answer would be simple:

“Being a father to Michelle and Zach.”

Anyone who knew Craig would agree that he loved his family with all his heart. He was exceptionally bright, witty, kind, and full of life. He knew how to live life to the fullest and, above all, how to bring light, laughter, and happiness to the people around him.

Craig is survived by his daughter, Teresa McCarthy; his son, Zachary McCarthy; his fiancée, Allison Ropar; and his sisters, Cheri Bartosz and Michelle King.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor Craig may consider supporting his fiancée, Allison, who devoted herself to his care and stepped away from her career to become his full-time caregiver during his illness. Any contribution would be deeply appreciated as she navigates the difficult transition ahead.

In accordance with Craig’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. An intimate family memorial will be held at Hollywood Beach, Florida, with the date to be determined as the family awaits the arrival of loved ones.

Those who would like to be present are welcome to reach out to the family for additional details.
