Eloise Coppler, of Mount Pleasant, died early Monday, May 27, 2024, at home, surrounded by her family. She was 77.
Eloise grew up in Fairborn, Ohio, where she met her husband, Ron. She graduated from high school in 1965 and attended Ohio State University. She completed two years of nursing school before deciding to become a flight attendant with American Airlines. She and Ron were married in 1968 and had two daughters. They moved to South Carolina, having fallen in love with its blue skies and sunny beaches when they were stationed in Myrtle Beach during Ron's time in the U.S. Air Force.
Once they were settled in Mount Pleasant, Eloise decided to continue nursing school at MUSC and graduated at the top of her class in 1983. She worked in the operating room and for a brief time in Marketing, but she was most proud of her work in the neonatal ICU. She relished the joys and challenges of providing critical care to the tiniest patients. After she retired from nursing, she enjoyed volunteering at Water Mission and as part of the Lowcountry Community Emergency Response Team.
Eloise embraced life in Charleston. She loved beach music and oyster roasts and shrimp and grits. She enjoyed filling her bird feeders and coaxing her little key lime tree to blossom. She loved to create art, not just with paint but also with flowers. She would go out into the back yard with a pair of clippers and return with gorgeous bouquets. She taught her children to savor long afternoons on the beaches of Sullivan's Island and to catch blue crabs off the side of our sailboat.
If you lost her in a crowded room, you could always locate her by her distinctive laugh. She was always cackling loudly about something. She loved silly pranks. She wrote her grandchildren letters that always ended with a joke. Her laugh will live on inside all of us.
Eloise is preceded in death by her parents, Stanley Carl Schnell and Mary Eloise Gardner Schnell. She is survived by her husband, Ron; her daughters, Jen and Amy; her son-in-law, Mike; her three grandchildren, Madeline (16), Logan (14), and Jack (13); and a large and loving extended family both here in South Carolina and in Ohio.
Our family would like to thank the entire medical team at MUSC-most notably, Dr. Alicia Zukas and staff-along with the superhumans of Lutheran Hospice, Sue and Steve, Holly and John, and a wonderful group of friends and neighbors who have been and continue to be incredibly supportive.
We will celebrate Eloise's life on Wednesday, June 12, at 11:00 at St. Luke's Chapel, 181 Ashley Avenue, Charleston.
In lieu of flowers, Eloise asked that you please consider making a donation to Doctors Without Borders.
