George Phillip Murphy

George Phillip Murphy 82 entered into eternal rest on November 6 th , 2023 after a long illness. Mr. George Phillip Murphy, husband of Joann Riggs Murphy.


Mr. Murphy was born in St. Augustine, Florida on June 12, 1941 to the late Nettie Elizabeth (Dot) Murphy and V. George Murphy. He grew up in Decatur, Georgia and graduated from Southwest DeKalb High School. Phillip attended Charleston Southern College for a short time.


He moved to Hanahan in 1961 and he and his wife, JoAnn, were married on June 16, 1962. Mr. Murphy was self-employed and did residential and commercial development, his projects included residential communities, business parks, apartments, and churches. He was a member of Christ’s Sanctified Holy Church and was a Sunday School teacher for the youth class and the young adult’s class. He was on the board at Trident Technical College. Additionally, Mr. Murphy served on the City of Hanahan Planning Commission for 8 years, President of the Lions Club, and a member of the Rotary Club. Mr. Murphy enjoyed spending time with his family and snow skiing in Vail Colorado.

 

In addition to his wife of 61 years he is survived by four children. Denise Murphy Walsh (Jim), George Phillip Murphy Jr., Kevin Riggs Murphy, and Allison Murphy Levato (Chris). His eight grandchildren were the light of his life. Jordan Phillip Murphy (Justice), Caitlan Walsh Tucker (Matt), Steven Chandler Murphy, Jessica Walsh, Morgan O’Neal Murphy, Logan Riggs Murphy, Brooklyn Claire Murphy, Taylor Levato, Tyler Levato and Kristin Elizabeth Levato and one great grandchild, Shelton Murphy. He is also survived by one sister Alice Murphy Collins (Danny) of Virginia Beach, Virginia. One brother ,Douglas Murphy (Gale) of Fort Valley, Georgia, along with several nieces and nephews.


The family would like to extend a special thanks to the caregivers who assisted in his comfort over the last several years. Dottie Lincoln, Julie Rodriguez, Precious Moultrie, Aishia Hill, Rendetta Murray. We would also like to thank the service provided by Amedisys Home Health Care, Chaplain Mark Cook, Nurse Jennifer Porter, and Shaunta Rivers.

 

The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Murphy are invited to attend the funeral service of the former at Christ’s Sanctified Holy Church in Hanahan on Wednesday, November 15 at 2pm.
