Jane R Smith

October 11, 1941 — December 13, 2023

Daniel Island

Martha Jane Richardson ( Jane Smith)  was born on October 11,1941 in Thomasville Georgia. Shortly after, she moved with her family to Atlanta, Ga. While in high school,at North Fulton High, she moved again with her family to Jacksonville, FL.

Upon graduation from high school, she returned to Georgia where she attended the University of Georgia. Jane was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority at UGA. After leaving UGA, she returned to Jacksonville Fla. It was in Jacksonville where she met Robert Wadley. They were married on December 29,1961. On October 16, 1962, their first son, Kevin Wadley was born. It was just three weeks after his birth that Jane and Bob moved to Tallahassee, FL. They would have a second son, David Wadley, who was born on November 3,1965. The Wadley’s would reside in Tallahassee until 1984 when they moved to Charleston, SC.

While in Tallahassee, Jane was a stay at home mom for the boys while they were young. As the boys grew older,  Jane went back to school part time to receive a horticultural degree. Jane had a green house at their home in Tallahassee, and it was apparent that she had a natural god given “ green thumb”. With her degree and natural talents she was selected as the Landscape Supervisor for the Florida Governors Mansion during the administration of Governor Bob Graham. Jane was invited during her tenure ,at the Governors mansion, to help in creating a hybrid rose for First Lady Roselyn Carter. Jane continued gardening throughout the rest of her private life, and never lost the ability to make any plant blossom to its full potential.

Another passion of Jane’s was caring for foster babies. Jane took into her home several babies, at different times, to foster while they transitioned from birth to their adopted families. She was a natural at providing them with the love and care they needed in that critical time of their lives.

Jane was active in the Tallahassee Junior League and was a regular parishioner at St. John’s Espiscopal Church.

Jane and Bob were divorced in 1985 and she left Charleston to return to Atlanta, Ga. It was there that she met Tommy Smith. Jane and Tommy were married on News Years Eve 1999. They moved to his family home in Bremen, Ga.

Jane started, and ran her own company in the late 80’s, called Mothering Moms. She provided service to women who had recently given birth and worked especially with those suffering from postpartum syndrome. Jane, and her company, helped many Atlanta area women transition into motherhood by caring for and guiding them as they became new moms.

While married to Tommy, Jane decided to take on a new passion and career,

and became an esthetician. Jane, who always had beautiful skin, helped Atlanta ladies by sharing her knowledge with them and working with them to try and have skin as beautiful as hers.

Jane is preceded in death by her parents James and Evelyn Richardson. Jane is survived by her sister Susan Dynes, her husband Tommy Smith, her son Kevin Wadley and her two granddaughters Eva and Sims Wadley, her son David Wadley and his wife Kate Wadley.
