Joan Marie Henning

Joan Marie Henning, 84, of Swansea, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. Born April 23, 1941, in Fairport, New York, Joan spent her early years in and around Rochester before moving to Swansea in 1990.

Joan married the love of her life, Richard "Dick" Henning Sr., on April 24, 1971. Together, they shared 41 joyful years filled with dancing, bowling, and a love that inspired everyone who knew them. After Dick's passing in 2004, Joan built a vibrant new circle of friends at the Pelion Senior Center, where her adventurous spirit and lively sense of humor made her a favorite companion. She shared a special 20-year friendship with Laura Dowey, the center's director, who treated and loved Joan as her own mother, and remained by her side with unwavering devotion until Joan's final day.

A woman of deep faith, Joan loved the Lord and found great joy in attending church and worshipping with her church family. She was also an ardent Elvis Presley fan and a natural storyteller who made room in her heart and home for everyone she met. To her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and dear friends, she was affectionately known as "Gigi," a name that perfectly captured her playful spirit and boundless love.

Joan is survived by her children: Christine, Richard (and wife Abby), Tammy, Steven, Melissa (and husband Bobby), Tina, and Tim; as well as two stepchildren and one adopted child. She was the proud grandmother of 13 grandchildren and the adored great-grandmother of 17 great-grandchildren. Joan was especially grateful for the loving care of her niece Denise and Denise's immediate family, who offered unwavering time, love, and compassion throughout Joan's years in South Carolina.

As per Joan's wishes, a private graveside gathering of her children took place in her honor.

Joan's life was a testament to love, laughter, faith, and inclusion. Her memory will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
