John Matthew Kotila

John Matthew Kotila, 84, died Thursday, February 14, 2019 at Roper Hospital.

John is survived by his wife of 20 years, Patricia. He had two daughters, Quenby Kotila and Megan Kotila of Wilmington, NC; two stepchildren, Jason Dufault (Nicole Riley) of Ocean Springs, MS, and Jessie Dufault Mahaffey (Ryan) of Lansdale, PA.,; three step-grandchildren, Grady, Riley and Cody Mahaffey; sister Katherine Kotila Scholz, three nieces Janet Burkett, Julie Tate and Jean Mellum and their families all of Ohio. We can not leave out his constant companion of the past three years, his fur baby, Maggie.

Born July 6, 1934, John grew up in Hancock, MI before moving to Brookville, OH at the age of 15. He graduated from Ohio University with a degree in electrical engineering and worked until the age of 80.

John was a kind and gentle man who did not know a stranger. He was a very positive person, quick to smile and had a quick wit. He loved music and so enjoyed singing with his friends in the Lowcountry Chorus of the Senior Center.

A celebration of John's life will be held for family and friends on Saturday, February 23 beginning with a visitation from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM immediately followed by the service at Lutheran Church of The Redeemer, 714 Riverdale, Drive, Charleston, SC. A reception will be held in the Family Life Center following the service.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in memory of John to either Lutheran Church of The Redeemer at the address above, or Shriners Hospital at shrinershospitalsforchildren.org.
