Josiah “Joe” William Aytes, Sr.Josiah “Joe” William Aytes, Sr., 71, of Charleston, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2026. In a touching reflection of a lifelong love, Joe passed away on the anniversary of his marriage to his beloved wife, Karen.
Born and raised in Charleston, Joe built his life around faith, family, and hard work. He raised his family there and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Joe loved his church, cherished time with his family, and could often be found working with his hands on a project. He was happiest when helping others, fixing something, or spending time with those he loved most.
Joe is survived by his children: Jessica Hucks (Adam), Aimee Ayers (Richard), Josiah Aytes (AnnMarie), and Sarah Harriford (Kenneth). He was a proud grandfather to Addika, Indicus, Leo, and Atlas Hucks; Hayleigh, Easton, and Ella Ayers; and all those blessed to know and love him as Bumpa.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Karen Hildreth Chassey Aytes, and his parents, Arthur Raymond Aytes and Virginia Jackson Aytes.
Those who knew Joe will remember his generous spirit, his steadfast faith, and his deep love for family. They will also remember his remarkable ability to find himself in the middle of unexpected mishaps. Close friends and family often joked that hearing sirens in the distance was enough to make them wonder what Joe had gotten himself into this time. It was one of the many stories that brought laughter and joy to those who loved him.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to his eldest daughter, Jessica Hucks, for the loving and selfless care she provided during the last several years of Joe's life. Her devotion, compassion, and unwavering support brought him comfort, dignity, and companionship, and her family will forever be grateful for the sacrifices she made as his caregiver.
A service celebrating Joe's life will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Old St. Andrew's Parish Church in Charleston, South Carolina, followed by a reception with family and friends. Flowers may be sent directly to the church.
Though he will be deeply missed, Joe's love, laughter, faith, and legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
