Madeleine Cavanaugh

March 8, 1938 — March 17, 2020

Madeleine (“Mady”) Cavanaugh, 82, of Georgetown, wife of James Joseph Cavanaugh of 62 years, entered into eternal rest on March 17, 2020, surrounded by her family.

Born on March 08, 1938 in Brooklyn, Madeleine is the daughter of the late Salvatore and Louise Angrisano.

She was a parishioner of St. Mary Our Lady of Ransom church in Georgetown and an active member in the Wedgefield community.

Those who were blessed to have her in their lives know what a compassionate, driven and special person she was. We are all better people as a result of our relationship with her. A better mother, wife and friend she could not have been.

Her combination of compassion, drive and wisdom was extraordinary. She was a trailblazer in establishing the first-ever female sports league in Valley Stream, NY in the mid 70’s. She took up golf at age 50 and quickly became club champion. She volunteered to help those less-fortunate. And most importantly – she was a loving wife, an inspirational mom, a proud grandma, and a trusted mentor for the friends she cherished and the players she coached.

Besides her husband Jim, Madeleine is survived by her four loving children: Laura Cavanaugh, Timothy Cavanaugh, Christopher Cavanaugh and James Cavanaugh; her daughters-in law Mafalda Arena-Cavanaugh and Donna McLaughlin; and her seven grandchildren: Christopher, Lauren, Jack, James, Michael, Alexandra and Carly.

On behalf of our family, thank you to all who have sent prayers and well-wishes over the four years of her hard-fought health struggles. You can’t begin to know how much it meant to us and to her.

In lieu of flowers, we are requesting that donations to be sent to The First Tee: https://www.firstteecoastalcarolinas.org/memorials/– a golf charity for which she volunteered her time and talents that introduces the sport and its values of integrity, respect and perseverance to young people who might not otherwise be afforded the opportunity.

Arrangements have been entrusted to McAlister-Smith Funeral and Cremation, Palmetto Cremation Society, 5638 N Rhett Ave, N Charleston, SC 29406
