Margaret “Megs” Elizabeth Rittenbury, MD, age 67, passed away on May 1, 2026, surrounded by her family. Born on September 30, 1958, in Richmond, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Max S. Rittenbury and Margaret B. Rittenbury. She is survived by her loving husband, Reese Wylie Lesslie, Jr.; her son, Charles Max Lesslie, PharmD (Stephanie Lesslie, PharmD); her daughter, Julia Margaret “Maggie” Van Zile; her two grandsons, Parker Lesslie and Luke Lesslie; her sister, Julia Anne Rittenbury; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Megs spent over 20 years serving the state of South Carolina as a child and adolescent psychiatrist at the Berkeley County Mental Health Center. Outside of her professional life, she was deeply involved in her church, where she sang in the choir and participated in the bell choir. Megs also enjoyed participating in historical reenactment events on weekends alongside her husband, Wylie, and many close friends. Beyond church and reenactments, Megs could often be found boating with family and friends while enjoying the Charleston weather, starting a new needlepoint project and sewing creations in her “craft room,” or spiritedly cheering on her USC Gamecocks.
She will be remembered for her cheerful and determined spirit, her ability to find the positive in difficult challenges, and her unwavering morals. Megs touched many lives throughout her lifetime and will be deeply missed.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, May 8, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church in West Ashley. The family will receive visitors in the sanctuary following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church renovations.
