Martha Jane Combs

October 6, 1932 — April 10, 2022

Martha Jane Combs, 89, (Jane, Mom or Grandma Janie to all who knew and loved her) of North Charleston, wife to Albert Eugene Combs, (Al/Skeet) of 70 years, entered into eternal rest on April 10, 2022, surrounded by her family.

Born on October 06, 1932 in New Albany, Indiana, Jane was a daughter of the late Raymond Lilly and Amy Peake Lilly.

Jane was a career Air Force wife for 22 years. She and Al relocated 14 times while raising 6 children. Her devotion to her family overflowed into scouting, volunteering at their schools, and cheering them on in sports and other extracurricular activities. Her love of children led her to a second career in child care. Jane was active in her church and community. For many years in Charleston she volunteered at Echo House, the Neighborhood House Soup Kitchen, and St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Her hobbies included pottery classes, cake decorating, ceramics, tatting, sewing, and making patchwork blankets for all her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a lifetime blood donor with the Charleston Red Cross receiving awards for 50+ pheresis donations in 1999 and, along with her husband Al, Platelet Couple of the Year in 2002. In their retirement Jane and Al enjoyed many adventures off shore and traveling the Intercoastal Waterway on their sailboat, camping across the United States and RVing through Europe. Her special family lullabies and songs, taught to her children, carried down to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, will live on through generations to come. She leaves behind a legacy of love.

Besides her husband, Jane is survived by daughters Roxanna (David) Mills of Augusta, Georgia, Denise (Lance, deceased) Butler of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Dawn (David) Smith of Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, sons Rodney (Rebecca) Combs of Talking Rock, Georgia, Curt (Kathy) Combs of North Charleston, South Carolina, Eric (Mary) Combs of Blairsville, Georgia, as well as 23 grandchildren, 63 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.
