Paul John Roessel, 74, of Charleston, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2025.
Paul was born on September 28, 1951, in Manhattan, New York, to the late Mona and Howard Roessel. He grew up in Monroe, NY, where he spent much of his life before moving to Charleston ten years ago to be closer to his children and granddaughter.
A lifelong musician, Paul found joy and connection through music and the many conversations that filled his days. With his gift of gab and his easygoing nature, he had a talent for bringing people together wherever he went. His love for rhythm and melody was matched only by his warmth, humor, and belief in the inherent goodness of people. His friends and family will remember him for his sense of humor and his ability to tell stories about everything in life.
Paul was also a devoted New York Mets fan—ever hopeful and loyal through every up and down season. Whether watching a game, debating a play, or reminiscing about the team’s glory days, he approached his fandom with the same passion and humor he brought to everything else in life.
Above all else, Paul’s family was the most important part of his life. He cherished every moment spent with them and took great pride in their closeness and love.
Paul is survived by his loving wife, Sherry Roessel (née Brandes); his daughter, Nicole Hall, and her husband Eric Hall, of Charleston, SC; his son, Daniel Rake, of Charleston, SC; his beloved granddaughter, Stella Grace Rake; and his brother, Mark Roessel, and his wife Sonia Roessel, of Staten Island, NY. He is also survived by many sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom brought him great joy throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mona and Howard Roessel, of Monroe, NY.
Paul’s memory will live on in the music he shared, the conversations he sparked, the laughter he inspired, and the lives he touched.
A celebration of Paul’s life will be held in Charleston at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family invites those wishing to honor his memory to consider a donation to a local music education program or charity of their choice.
