Listen to Obituary

Surrounded by his beloved family, Richard Lenert Henry (Dick) of Callawassie Island, South Carolina passed away in Charleston, SC on December 26, 2025 after an illness. He was 83.

Son of the late Helen Allen Henry and the late Lenert William Henry, Dick was born on October 27, 1942 in Newton, Massachusetts and raised in Weston and Hingham, Massachusetts.

He graduated from Governor Dummer Academy in 1960 (The Governor’s Academy, Byfield, MA) and Princeton University, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture in 1964. It was during his years at Princeton that he met his wife, Anne Elisabeth Marshall (Smith ‘66), whom he married in June 1966.

After Princeton, Dick earned his Masters of Architecture at Harvard Graduate School of Design in 1966. Upon completion of his studies, Dick and Anne spent two years in the Peace Corps in Nabeul, Tunisia, after which they settled in Philadelphia where Dick started his architectural career at Kneedler Mirick Zantzinger and where he became a Partner in 1976. In 1981, he moved to the architectural firm, CUH2A, in Princeton, where he ultimately became President and CEO as the firm grew from 53 people in one office to 425 in five locations, including one in London.

Retiring to the South Carolina Low Country, Dick’s primary interest was the constant pursuit of an even better photograph of an egret in breeding plumage. He was also an active member of the Callawassie Island Paddlers Club and a founding member of the Callawassie Island Photography Club.

Outside of the office, Dick served the various communities in which he lived -- as a member of the Tredyffrin Township (PA) Planning Commission and Historic Architectural Review Board, as a member and Chairman of the Lawrence Township (NJ) Board of Historic Architectural Review, on the Board of the Lawrenceville Main Street Project, and as a member and Chairman of the Callawassie Island (SC) Architectural Review Committee.  He was a dedicated member of the Princeton Alumni Associations in the various cities where he lived, and he served as chairman of his class’ 30th reunion and on the graduate alumni board of Quadrangle Club.

Dick was also the most devoted father at his children's schools, cheering avidly from the sidelines at field hockey, volleyball, lacrosse, ice hockey, and golf matches, and attending every recital and concert performed.

Dick is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Anne, daughter Megan Henry and her daughter Elisabeth (Houston, TX), daughter Marion Henry, her husband Andrew Colyer, and their children Jack, Maggie, and Katherine (Chicago, IL), son John Henry (Orlando, FL), his brother John Allen Henry and his wife Kate Carpenter Henry (Naples, FL), and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

He is predeceased by his parents, Helen Allen Henry and Lenert William Henry and his brother, William Abbott Henry.

A celebration of life will be held later in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to The Governor’s Academy (Byfield, MA), The Open Land Trust (Beaufort, SC), or The Pleasant River Wildlife Foundation (Addison, ME).
