Robert Dodge Montague, age 83, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2025, at Roper St. Francis Hospital in Charleston, South Carolina, surrounded by his family.
Born on April 6, 1942, and raised in Cohasset, Massachusetts, Bob lived a full, vibrant life marked by devotion, integrity, and heart. He was the beloved son of the late Everett Ila Montague and Janet Hill Montague.
He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Boston University and proudly served his country as an honorable Vietnam veteran, carrying the values of service, sacrifice, and loyalty throughout his life. Bob began his professional journey at R.H. Stearns in Boston before launching his owsuccessful businesses — a true entrepreneur at heart.
After an earlier attempt at retirement, he and his wife Mimi settled on Seabrook Island, South Carolina, where he started yet another small but thriving venture: Reliable Property Managers, LLC. Even in his later years, Bob’s drive and vision never dimmed. He eventually retired for good — though anyone who knew him knows he was never one to slow down.
He was a dedicated husband to Mary Ann (Mimi) Montague, his beloved partner and best friend. His love for Mimi was so strong, it set a lasting example for his children — a model of deep commitment, kindness, and partnership. Their bond was one of enduring love, laughter, and unwavering support. He was a loving and proud father to Jennifer and Jeffrey, and he welcomed their spouses, Gary and Leslie, into the family as his own.
Bob’s heart expanded even further with the births of his cherished grandchildren: Emily, Courtney, and Josie Otten, and Nicole and Mason Montague. He adored them beyond measure and took immense joy in being a steady presence in their lives — cheering them on, sharing stories, and passing down his wisdom with a sparkle in his eye and humor that never failed to bring a smile. He was immensely proud of all his grandchildren and celebrated each of their unique gifts, accomplishments, and personalities.
A lifelong Boston sports fan, Bob passionately followed the Red Sox, Patriots, and Bruins. He also loved the game of golf and found joy on the green — particularly under the South Carolina sun.
His faith was a cornerstone of his life. While living in Massachusetts, Bob was an active member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Scituate, where he found community, purpose, and peace. He had an innate ability to connect with people from all walks of life — his outgoing nature, sharp wit, and creative mind made him a friend, mentor, and confidant to many. Whether offering thoughtful advice, delivering an unforgettable speech, or simply sitting with someone in need, Bob had a way of making people feel heard and valued.
He was a natural leader, a successful businessman, and a man of remarkable intelligence, but it was his warmth, humor, and generosity of spirit that truly defined him. He gave more than he ever asked in return. He was always there with a helping hand, a clever quip, or the perfect words of encouragement.
Bob had a deep love for the ocean, and the beach was a place where he found peace and joy — often with family by his side, laughter in the air, and sand between his toes.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mimi Montague; his sister, Anne Montague; his children, Jennifer Montague Otten (Gary Ned) and Jeffrey Hill Montague (Leslie Ann); and his adored grandchildren, Emily, Courtney, and Josie Otten, and Nicole Elise and Mason Alexander Montague. He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett Ila Montague and Janet Hill Montague.
Bob leaves behind a legacy too vast to count — lives changed, hearts touched, and memories that will live on for generations. To know Bob was to be loved by him. He was, above all, a family man — pure and true — who showed us all what it means to lead with love, strength, and kindness.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be held on Seabrook Island, South Carolina (date to be determined).
