William Rieppe Mehrtens, Jr. 94, died on September 22, 2022. He was born August 17, 1928 in Charleston, SC, the son of the late W. Rieppe Mehrtens, Sr. and Hildegard Cappelmann Mehrtens. Family and friends are invited to attend his memorial service at the Church of The Holy Communion, Saturday, October 8, 2022 at 12 noon. The family will receive relatives and friends following the service at Franke at Seaside at the Burgess Center. Burial will take place at a later date.

 

Mr. Mehrtens was raised in the family home at 58 George St. which was built in 1803 and is now owned by The College of Charleston. He was a graduate of Bennett Elementary School and The High School of Charleston (’46) and attended The Citadel. While serving in the US Army during the Korean Conflict, Mr. Mehrtens married Sarah Ann Godbold in 1951. They had one child, a daughter, Susan Ann. Rieppe and Sarah moved to Virginia where they lived for 50 years in Arlington. Rieppe was a registered architect licensed in Virginia, Maryland and The District of Columbia.  He was a member of The American Institute of Architects and a charter member of The American Institute of Architects, Northern Virginia Chapter. Rieppe and Sarah returned to their beloved Charleston in 2004 to reside in Mount Pleasant.

 

Mr. Mehrtens is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, a granddaughter, Sarah Sonya Quinn, Johns Island and a sister, Mrs. R. Garrison (Jean) Latimer, Columbia, SC. He was predeceased by his daughter, Susan Mehrtens Quinn and two sisters, Mrs. Thomas Marion (Lois) Pinckney and Mrs. Edward M (“Bobbie) Ostendorff.

 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Communion Church or to the Franke at Seaside Foundation.
